Frontpoint vs ADT Home Security: An Expert Comparison

In this post we will be comparing Frontpoint with ADT Home Security and see which alarm company comes out on top. We will also look into other alternatives.

The best way to protect yourself from home invaders is to invest in a security setup for your home. When you are shopping around for home security you want to make sure you are going with a company that meets your specific needs. Those needs can vary from customer to customer, and security companies make sure to cater to those varied needs. One thing you want to make sure of is that the company you decide to go with offers the equipment, monitoring services and app that works for your needs.

Frontpoint Hub

We will start off by taking a look at what type of hub Frontpoint has to offer. The brains of their security system is called the Frontpoint Hub. The Frontpoint Hub has a very simplistic design but is still very modern. It comes in two parts: the hub and the keyboard.

The Frontpoint Hub itself is white, and it is wireless and cellular so you do not have to have an internet connection for it to work. The Hub has Alarm.com’s Crash and Smash technology, which means that if an intruder damages the unit, it will still work.

The Hub allows you to have up to 50 different user codes. It also includes Z-Wave which will allow you to connect to different branded smart home devices like smart locks and smart thermostats.

It is powered by an AC power source, and comes with a 24-hour backup battery in case the power goes out. The keypad itself is also wireless and battery operated. It is powered by two double A batteries with a battery life of up to 2 years. The keypad has a push button design that allows you to quickly arm and disarm your system with a simple touch of a button.

The Frontpoint Hub is DIY which means you will need to set it up yourself.

ADT Control Panel

ADT offers a simplistic control panel that would be great if you are looking for something that just covers the basics and is easy to use. This panel doesn’t have a specific brand name, and ADT just calls it their digital panel. This panel is not the sleekest designed panel on the market, and it certainly doesn’t have a lot of features but it does protect your home.

The panel has a simple design with a push-button keypad. The panel itself can be wall mounted or you can place it on a desktop. It is pretty expandable, allowing you to connect up to a total of 250 devices including 16 cameras, 32 keyfobs, 8 touchscreens or alpha keypads, and up to 224 Z-Wave devices. You can also have up to 99 user codes for this system.

The ADT panel works by connecting to a landline, but you do have the option of a cellular backup. You don’t have to install this panel yourself; ADT will have their professional installers set up all your security equipment (and you will mostly likely have to pay an installation fee).

ADT also offers an HD touchscreen keypad which is a full color touchscreen keypad that acts like a control panel. One really great feature of this specific keypad is that it connects to WIFI allowing you to free yourself from the need of a landline for your system to work. This keypad also has an 8-hour rechargeable backup battery in case your power goes out.

ADT’s touchscreen panel can be wall mounted or placed on a flat surface. The touchscreen panel will also allow you to view video from ADT branded cameras, display system status, and allow you to control smart home devices all from the panel’s native interface.

Frontpoint Hub vs ADT Control Panel

The Frontpoint Hub and ADT’s two control panels are all high-quality control panels that are easy to use. They offer you the ability to set custom user codes, have Z-Wave technology, are wireless with battery backup, and can be expanded to include more than just security equipment. ADT’s control panels however do have a built-in keypad while Frontpoint’s Hub is controlled by a separate stand-alone keypad.

Their cameras work by connecting wirelessly to your home’s WIFI network. All their cameras have excellent video resolution, and their doorbell camera even includes a 2-way audio feature that allows you to directly communicate with whomever is around your doorbell camera.

Frontpoint vs ADT: Equipment

When looking at Frontpoint’s and ADT’s basic equipment you will not find a big difference between them. They both offer the same type of security and life safety sensors. ADT however offers wired versions of their sensors while Frontpoint does not. One of the biggest differences between the two is that ADT offers professional installation (which has a fee) while Frontpoint is DIY (do it yourself) which means you will have to set up all of the equipment that Frontpoint sends you yourself.

Frontpoint and ADT both have a really wide variety of add-on equipment. Frontpoint however would be the clear winner in our eyes when it comes to their add-on equipment because they offer a bit more variety. We do however really like ADT’s thermostat due to its ease of use. We also like the fact that ADT offers Kwikset locks, and that they will set up all your equipment for you. Everything that is sent to you by Frontpoint will need to be set up by yourself.

Having said all that, if you want the best of both worlds, take a look at Link Interactive. Our DIY home security system can be set up by yourself in minutes, and it comes with the latest Z-Wave and home security features, powered by none other than Alarm.com (the very same company that powers Frontpoint’s security services).

Frontpoint vs ADT: Monitoring

The monitoring services that are offered by both Frontpoint and ADT are pretty much the same. They both offer 24/7 professional, self-monitoring, and video monitoring services. One of the main differences between the two monitoring services is that Frontpoint’s prices for these services tend be cheaper than that of ADT’s.

The second difference is how their self-monitoring services are powered. ADT uses the Pulse App which is free to download and works for Apple and Android devices. The Pulse app allows you to remotely control and customize your security, home automation, and video surveillance equipment. You can also arm and disarm your system, get push-notifications for events, and view live and recorded video from the Pulse App.

Frontpoint’s app is also free to download and works for Apple and Android the devices. Frontpoint’s app offers the same services as the ADT Pulse app, but includes much much more. Because Fronpoint’s app is powered by Alarm.com you can use features like Geo-Fencing which is a feature that will automatically arm and disarm your system when you leave your home or when you return. The Geo-Fencing feature can also turn on/off smart lights, lock/unlock smart locks, and turn on/off your smart thermostats when you leave or return home.

If you’re interested in getting a Frontpoint system because they’re powered by Alarm.com, please take a look at our Alarm.com powered security system at Link Interactive. Priced for less, you get the exact same features of a Frontpoint system.

As you can see from today’s post there can be some big differences between companies and their security systems. ADT offers a wide variety of equipment that is professionally installed while Frontpoint also offers a wide variety of equipment that is DIY. Frontpoint’s and ADT’s basic equipment is very similar, but their hubs are a bit different from one another.

When comparing Frontpoint to ADT we prefer what Frontpoint has to offer. Frontpoint has a slightly larger selection of equipment than ADT. Also, Frontpoint monitoring and equipment prices are generally cheaper than that of ADT’s. However, if you are looking for a security system with professional installation ADT would be the right choice for you.

Probably the biggest reason why we feel Frontpoint is better than ADT is because of Alarm.com. In fact, if you agree with us that Alarm.com is the way to go, give our Link Interactive security system a look below.
